South Carolina Chapter Gathers for "Night at the Joe"

The Pile Driving Contractors Association of South Carolina Chapter hosted a 'Night at the Joe,' a social outing for Chapter members and friends to watch minor league baseball at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park where the host the Charleston RiverDogs (Tampa Bay affiliate) held off a spirted challenge by the Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City affiliate) with a final score of 4-3.

The family affair delivered
an evening of fun, fellowship, and a little shop talk for all attendees. Prior to the first pitch, the group indulged in a ballpark picnic at Doby's Deck (upper deck behind third base) then settled in to their designated block in Section 208 (just below Doby's Deck).

Thanks to all members and friends who attended 'Night at the Joe;' the PDCA-SC reconvenes for a business and dinner meeting on August 12th at Charleston's Town and Country Inn & Suites.

Update: August Webinar on 'Vibrations' now FREE to industry

No charge to attend!!

The 2021 PDCA Education Webinar Series #5 coming August 3rd features an important presentation entitled Pile Driving Vibrations - Monitoring and Analysis by subject matter expert Dr. Catherine Aimone-Martin. This program is now accessible to everyone in the pile driving industry, including non-PDCA members, at no cost.

"Many PDCA members believe that maximizing attendance at this event is important because there is significant interest from professionals at the USAC and other government agencies who normally do not have resources available for association related activity," noted PDCA Executive Director Frank Peters. "Further, the content that this program will deliver is critical for pile drivers to ensure ongoing driven pile foundations are installed through quality, safe and responsible construction practices; as the non-profit, pile driving industry representative, PDCA intends put the industry first and association matters second."

Peters continued; "The reality is that vibrations in pile driving are a fact. However, vibrations resulting from the installation of a driven pile-based foundation are often misunderstood and even misquoted. PDCA works aggressively on behalf of its members to ensure that this important issue is widely, accurately and thoroughly communicated throughout the pile driving industry. The August 3rd webinar is an excellent opportunity for everyone to gain a better understanding of this issue."

Please plan to attend this important presentation on vibrations in which are a component of a driven pile-based foundation installation. This is a webinar that everyone in the pile driving industry should attend. Follow the links below for full session details and to register today; also, you are encouraged to share this invitation to any colleagues that you think can benefit from this presentation.

The program will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2021, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM EDT.

It's a Boy! Meet the newest member of the PDCA Community

You might recall reading in the March edition of 'A Pile of News,' a teaser alert when we noted that "one influential pile driving industry professional is expecting." For those who guessed Jill Harris, the Publisher of PileDriver magazine, you are correct!

Jill, Dad and brother Arlo welcomed Baby Sam into the world on his due date of July 13th.

One would expect that a newborn and his family would be settling in their house that's just slightly more 'full' than it was mere weeks ago. But in the case of this Winnipeg family, they are busy showing their home as they prepare to move into a new residence.

Please join PDCA in sending a hearty congratulations to Jill and her very handsome, new baby boy!

Webinar on Pile Driving Vibrations Aug. 3; Register Today

PDCA Past President and current president of Herbert F. Darling Inc., Buck Darling (pictured, left) has offered insightful perspectives to pile driving contractors throughout his years of involvement in PDCA. He recently indicated that the PDCA 2021 Education Webinar Series installment slated for August 3rd from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM EDT featuring Dr. Cathy Aimone-Martin (pictured, right) will be an enlightening program, certain to provide valuable perspectives on a key consideration in pile driving - vibrations.

"Catherine was a featured speaker for the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) at the recently held International Foundation Construction and Equipment Exposition (IFCEE) conference held in Dallas, Texas," stated Darling. "Her knowledge of not only the technical aspects of vibration and vibration control, but the effects they have on the pile driving industry and its practitioners (mostly undeserved) is unparalleled. She has the education and academic experience to back up a career in industry and consulting on one of the most vexing problems perceived with the pile driving industry, to go along with her overall expertise in geology and mining! Her presentation is not to be missed."

Dr. Martin's August 3rd presentation is entitled Pile Driving Vibrations - Monitoring and Analysis and will review and discuss the following:
  • Best practices used to monitor and manage ground and structure vibrations during pile driving
  • The origins and justifications of vibration limits found in many pile driving project specifications

  • Use of seismographs to develop a site vibration attenuation model

  • Projects where claims of structure damage were circumvented or easily refuted based on sound measured data

Click here to reserve your spot in this webinar.

The program on pile driving vibrations featuring Dr. Martin is brought to you by valued PDCA sponsors Hammer & Steel, Inc. and Northwestern Mutual - Patrick A. Di Cerbo.

PDCA 2021 Education Webinar Series events offer attendees up to 2.0 hours of Professional Development Hours. Forthcoming virtual programs from PDCA are scheduled for the first Tuesdays in October and December. We hope you can join us!

Notes from the Field
All the rowdy friends were there, did Hank Jr. stop by? According to photos, morale is high at Aggregate Technologies, which hosted a company pig roast on the beach to kick off the South Texas summer.

Uh oh! Maybe you were late for the beach party, or any obligation you had in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia or the Carolinas the other day? You can blame Morris-Shea for snarling the traffic... sorry guys, your social media made this too easy 😉!

Did they once compete against alum Ellen DeGeneres? A geotechnical exploration job on the University of New Orleans campus brought nostalgic feelings at Eustis Engineering, which employs numerous UNO grads. The work was adjacent to a campus site considered the hub for engineering students who participate in the annual ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition.

Pile Driving History Part 1 Opal gray becomes a camo when trying to identify it from a distance on a foggy waterway, or so that was the conclusion made by Manson Construction leadership in 1967. As they were building a terminal for the Port of Seattle, they couldn't see their equipment from afar. That prompted the adoption and implementation of the red and white brand.

Pile Driving History Part 2 Massman Construction led a 1966 joint venture that included Kiewit for construction of the W.D. Mayo Lock and Dam 14 on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma; to date, it provides the region commerce, hydropower and recreation. Crews installed sheet pile cofferdams for job site safety. Upon completion, a 1970 ribbon cutting attracted former president Lyndon Johnson.

Space Race 2021 Perhaps a pile hammer designed for the cosmic grade of the The Red Planet is in development because any future building on Mars would need to start with a foundation. Check out recent work at S&ME involving interplanetary innovations.

PDCA proudly represents an increasingly diverse member-base. We were humbled to catch a Facebook post from new member Black River Solar, which gives IFCEE '21 a positive endorsement thanks, guys!
