Lodge Lumber grows product line, now distributes JP Specialties Earth Shield Waterstop.

Trinity Products announces its third expansion of the distribution division. The new facility at 2200 Cabot Drive in Lisle, IL, doubles existing office space and other capacity.

Giving back:
Bowen Engineering Corp. donates a Day of Service to the local community through participation in the restoration of a non-profit community center serving children and families in Indianapolis.

C.D. Perry & Sons sponsored Ride With Mike, a fundraiser for an Albany, NY, cancer foundation. Mike is a two-time lymphoma survivor, construction superintendent and car enthusiast.

Eustis Engineering provided geotechnical services for the most ambitious environmental restoration project in Louisiana; company reps joined Gov. Edwards at the groundbreaking.

GZA GeoEnvironmental staff was on hand, along with Gov. Healy, U.S. Rep. Neal and other lawmakers, for a ceremonial groundbreaking of expanded facilities for the Holyoke Veterans Home in Massachusetts; the firm is retained for geotechnical and permitting services.

Race Coastal Engineering is in a Connecticut consortium that met with Gov. Lamont and area legislators at Mystic Shipyard to discuss marine industry issues; the event earned TV coverage.

Shannon & Wilson reports that VP Michael Harney won appointment from Gov. Inslee to the State of Washington Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Apex Steel Pipe & Piling hosts speakers who share various professional experiences with the interns. July's segment was Uvalde Mayor McLauglin, who disparaged complacency.

Anniversaries:
Tolunay-Wong Engineers marks 30 years in business in 2023 see a festive anniversary video. Founded in Houston in 1993 by Dr. Daniel Wong, who subsequently served under two Texas governors as chairman of the Board of Professional Engineers, the firm has grown to 12 offices sprinkled throughout Texas and Louisiana and has amassed a wide range of industry awards.

Ryan Wakeford garnered royal designation and a BBQ lunch, courtesy of his Terracon colleagues in Charleston, SC, following his passage of the P.E. exam.

Dagmar Pena, Sean Leatherbuery, Regan Swift of Universal Engineering Sciences were all honored for their inspection work on a Florida roadway project.

Ryan Maloney, construction law contributor to PileDriver magazine, and three of his partners at Jimerson Birr make the cut on the annual Best Lawyers in America list.

Anthony LaPlaca made the legal list, too, along with dozens of his Seyfarth Shaw colleagues.

In Sympathy:
William S. "Bill" Zoino, P.E., co-founder of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., passed away in July at age 91. The widely respected geotechnical engineer and dam builder was a dual grad of MIT, a Navy vet and family man. He maintained active industry involvement. GZA's CEO recalls Mr. Zoino's simple business philosophy: "Professional quality, service, family first."

On the Job

Blue Iron Foundation & Shoring brought mood lighting for nighttime pile driving on a CalTrans freeway.

Cajun Industries, LLC updates progress on a 450-pile installation for a new facility nearing 20K square feet that will become expanded space for Equipment services in Port Allen, LA.

Commerce Construction Corporation shares imagery from a waterfront improvement project it is performing in Gloucester County, NJ. Features include twelve 48-inch diameter piles and three walkway pile caps.

H.B. Fleming, Inc. installs a foundation for a subcontract on a Portland, ME, project that will become a new cold storage facility. Crews drive 550 H-piles, 180 feet, at a capacity of 1,100 kips.

Kokosing is half of the JV selected to build the Brent Spence Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Cincinnati to Covington, KY. The DOTs picked the design/builders for a $3.1B infrastructure investment.

Orion Marine updates from waterfront Tampa; it says Phase 1 of the developing Westshore Marina District is done. The job included installation of steel pipe piles to support an aluminum dock system.

Sealevel Construction is among the contractors on the front lines of Louisiana flood mitigation; its crews are making progress on the critical Bayou Lafourche pump station installation in Donaldsonville.

SJ Hamill Construction needs a pile driver foreman and other staff. Also, the Charleston, SC, contractor reminds you that it has a "big hammer," but didn't need it for crane work at the South Carolina Aquarium.

Clydesdale Steel services Meever USA with waler fabrication, exemplifying PDCA member collaboration.

JD Fields & Co. steel was installed and GeoQuip, Inc. hammers were used by crews working for the parent company of Hal Jones Contractor, on the new North Causeway Bridge in Ft. Pierce, FL.

ESP Associates, Inc. testing and inspection services team, led by Tracey Turner, finished work on a new band addition at Wando High School, just in time for the new school year.

GeoEngineers Inc. continues growing its Boston practice. Two new staff geotechs, Lisa Pavan and John McCabe, are reportedly on site at two neighboring Greystar developments near Revere Beach Parkway.

Haley & Aldrich strives to interest students in AEC jobs through their teachers. It hosted Boston Public Schools faculty for an externship, toured them on local projects and highlighted engineering roles.

UBC Pile Drivers and Divers ED Mark Benacquisto and colleagues were boat guests of clean energy proponents in New England; they visited developing offshore wind installations in the Atlantic.

Janice Graziosi of USI Insurance shares executive guidance on OSHA compliance, because, depending on your latitude, September can still bring dangerous heat and outside working conditions.

Media Hits

ENR (PAYWALL) covers the rebuild of the Port of Beaumont Terminal 1, where McCarthy replaces a critical piece of East Texas infrastructure. Robert Wood and Ryan Everette are quoted.

The Wall Street Journal (PAYWALL) reports on challenges the U.S. faces in Arctic glacial melt. Photos and video that show a Coast Guard icebreaker berthed at Juneau Cruise Ship Berths an installation PND Engineers, Inc. designed and for which the company subsequently won a 2017 PDCA Project of the Year Award.

Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo gets perspectives on the steel industry during interview with Atlas Tube CEO Barry Zekelman. Among the topics: consolidation, IRA, trade, economy and more.

INC. magazine publishes a piece on succession planning; among actualities in the article is Trinity Products founder and chairman Robert Griggs, who shares his philosophy of "open book management."

Q Magazine carries a story by Tyler Swanson, intern at TRC Companies, that examines mounting tensions among stakeholders in converting traditional farmland to solar harvesting fields. Learn about Agrivoltaics, an emerging land-use technique striving for common ground among competing factions.

Ground Engineering enlightens readers on the iconic Crooked House in Britain. Renowned for its unique foundation that continues to mitigate the effects of 19th century mining. ECS Limited geotech David Wilshaw was educated nearby and recalls the pub as a hangout among his peers.

Birmingham's Talk 99.5 FM aired an interview with Richard Shea of Morris Shea Bridge Company about his founding, management and support of the Birmingham Thunderbolts Softball national youth team.

Notes from the Field

Uber for antique airplanes might be a new side-hustle for Weeks Marine. For the second time this century, it relocated The Concorde, a supersonic jet known for the fastest-ever New York to London flight (in 1996, it completed the trip in 2:52:59). Now a museum piece in NYC, it needs offsite maintenance, and Weeks' crane/barge move was the only option. The contractor also moved the iconic aircraft in 2008.

Cue up the "back when I was in school" sob stories "Ten feet of snow" never has been and never will be a challenge for Miami kids walking to school, but when the FIU students go back to their apartments after class, some will be enjoying luxurious South Florida living in this Balfour Beatty US showpiece.

At least nobody had a viral jumbotron moment An office party for the Portland, OR, staff at Shannon & Wilson, Inc. took place at the MLS game between the local Thorns FC and San Diego. Their attendance was broadcast to the stadium on the big screen scoreboard, the crowd went wild!

Clean "dad" jokes, as told by staff at TRC Companies, Inc., which apparently manages a "Dadabase."

It's not a joke that vibration data is valuable to PDCA Share scientific findings with the industry. As we sign off and wish you a happy and safe Labor Day weekend, we remind you that the relentless battle cry at PDCA is "A driven pile...is a tested pile." You know this, you communicate this and you practice this. At the same time, you are aware of outside forces that may attempt to diminish this long-understood reality. At PDCA, the paramount objective is to advocate for the driven pile as the preferred method of deep foundation construction. This can only be effective when we all participate and contribute to the cause. PDCA Pacific Coast Chapter President Dermot Fallon is calling on representatives from the pile driving industry on the West Coast to volunteer for openings in Chapter leadership. Board positions are available to Contractors, Manufacturers, Suppliers, and Engineers in the region who work in and/or support driven pile-based construction.

Each year, the Pacific Coast Chapter hosts a successful clay shoot and administers a lucrative scholarship program for students pursuing construction careers, among other industry initiatives. Pres. Fallon and Board members coordinate these activities.

PDCA Courtesy Calls to Louisiana Members Render Photo Ops, Unique Finds

Who did we visit?
Periodically, PDCA drops-in on members around the U.S. to meet the great people who make up this organization and say thank you for supporting the driven pile industry. During a recent visit to Louisiana, we were fortunate to meet several representatives of member companies throughout the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Thibodaux areas, such as the teams at Sealevel Construction in Thibodeaux, Baker GCI in Prairieville, Gary and J.J. at MREC, Inc. in Norco, a couple of the techs at Darkhorse Industries in Port Allen, Chad Held at Eustis Engineering and Jason Engen and Mike Juneau at Premier Geotech & Testing in Baton Rouge, also paused to meet us for a couple minutes. In addition to the member offices, shops, yards, and/or trucks (in Chad's case) shown on this page, we also visited the following member offices: APC Construction, Boh Bros. Construction, Co, Group Contractors, Bottom Line Equipment, Meever USA, Ardaman and Associates, GeoEngineers, and Terracon.

It can be hard to find people in their offices when we stop in, unannounced. After we missed him at Boh Bros. Construction, we saw Tony Sepulvado later in the week at the Gulf Coast Chapter Clay Shoot, for which he serves as VP. Also at the Chapter event, we caught Courtney Stricklin from new member Omega Foundations. Ronnie Hoefeld at Meever USA wasn't available when we stopped at his office, but we were pleased to see him at Clay Shoot where he was on the team that finished in third place.

And what did we find?
Among some of our unique findings in Louisiana member offices was a trophy built using the 430 lb. black bear that Patriot Deep Foundations Pres. Kevin Gourgues harvested in Canada in 2022. Despite the 'Do Not Touch' sign that was on the display, he did let us feel the magnificent coat the animal had worn for the Canadian winter.

Moving on, we met Jessica Lambert at Beard Construction who showed off a wonderful piece of baseball memorabilia. It was a mounted section of a game program of then LSU baseball standout Alex Bregman, in action on the famed ballfield, with a Beard Construction banner hanging on the outfield wall behind him. Since those photos were taken, Bregman has gone on to be a two-time World Series champion with his fellow Houston Astros, and Beard has recently become a newly minted PDCA member!

Later, we were escorted past an impressive trophy case while visiting Cajun Industries. Since it was too full and too large to share a complete photo here, we zoomed in on a couple of the trophies that stood out to us; they were PDCA Project of the Year awards from previous years. They tell us that we can expect to see more trophy-worthy projects from their work in future competitions.

Finally, we were highly impressed when visiting J.J. Waguespack at Mississippi River Equipment Co. in Norco, LA. While he proudly told us that he still uses his pager (and he showed it to us) he also had large totes full of high-tech timing equipment used for competitive marathons. J.J. has a true passion for participating in and organizing duathlons and other racing events. He stood next to several past awards that were given out at the Pelicanman duathlon event that he organized for several years in the New Orleans area.

And if you've ever been to Louisiana, you know that the entire state takes pride in the multiple National Championship trophies that teams from Louisiana State University have earned through the years; remember the 2023 Women's Basketball? Or 2023 Baseball? While driving around Baton Rouge, we took a wrong turn and stumbled into a facility where we got to see the prized 'Natty's' that LSU football teams have brought back home in its storied history. With that said, happy College Football Season, we hope our team, er, YOUR team brings one home this year!

Gulf Coast Chapter Clay Shoot Brings Hot Temps, Competition

PVE Equipment USA, among the shooting station sponsors, featured a water-landing for busted clays.

On August 25th, the Bridgeview Gun Club in Port Allen, LA hosted the Gulf Coast Chapter Clay Shoot, followed by its 3rd quarter meeting. More than 50 attended the event which featured 13 shooting stations at which teams competed against one another for the top score. Here's a group photo of the participants before the temperatures surged and competition escalated:

In addition to shooting clays, participants enjoyed breakfast, courtesy of Premier Geotech and Testing, which also brought a cooling station to the shooting course offering shade and water. Later, lunch was courtesy of H&E Equipment.

The Chapter's business meeting took place in a shelter house on Bridgeview's grounds, following lunch and refreshments. This time was also spent recognizing the winners in the team and individual competitions.

More news from the Chapter meeting, it was announced that the 2024 Engineers Conference is scheduled for March 14, 2024, at L'Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge; it will be preceded by a crawfish boil at nearby Pointe Marie.

2023 Project of the Year Award Winners Span U.S.; Alaska to the Everglades

All smiles for the piling pros at Forefront Deep Foundations who were at their respective Southern California jobsites when news broke that they won a Project of the Year Award!

The PDCA Project of the Year Award celebrates the very best in deep foundation construction each year and is the premier recognition from the Pile Driving Contractors Association. The 2023 program attracted the most entries in history, signifying that the eventual winners were able to overcome, in most cases, stiff challenges from competing submissions. This year, eight member companies learned their entries in the categories of Land, Marine, Earth Retention, and Associate/Engineering won the top endorsement from the Judge's Panel, a collection of some of the industry's most revered pile driving professionals.

PDCA thanks the dozens of entrants in the 2023 program and encourages all members to participate in the program next year. Your project that finishes by December 31st, qualifies for the 2024 program; be sure to watch your inbox for details about next year's competition. You make the pile driving industry better when you broadcast your work that exemplifies unique design, problem solving, value engineering, cost savings, driven pile application, and/or end-user benefits.

SC Chapter: Previews Next Prez, Hears About New Machinery, Honors Edwards

South Carolina Chapter Founder Harry Robbins honors original and current Chapter Secretary/Treasurer, Andrea Edwards during 8/10 meeting.

In an ongoing effort to recognize some of the deep foundations industry professionals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the driven pile throughout the Southeastern U.S., the PDCA South Carolina Chapter stepped away from the large pool of consequential retirees to honor one of its MVP's who remains gainfully employed in the timber piling industry as a Division Administrator at Koppers Utility & Industrial Products. Andrea Edwards (pictured) has been a reliable supporter and volunteer with the Chapter, having served as the first, and only Secretary/Treasurer the organization has ever known. During the August 10, 2023, 3rd quarter Chapter Dinner Meeting in Charleston, Chapter founder Harry Robbins surprised Andrea by introducing the original (and current,) bean-counter as the latest honoree to earn the Harry Robbins Chapter Award. Andrea later told us that whe was "shocked" that they kept her award a secret. She then exclaimed, "But I do appreciate the recognition from this group of sweethearts, even Harry!"

Also notable at the meeting, Chapter Vice President Pete Adams (pictured) presided over his first meeting while President John King was out of state on personal business. Pete has enthusiastically taken on a leadership role with the Chapter and takes the reigns of the presidency, effective January 2024.

In addition to the social hour, the generous buffet spread of authentic southern cookin', and ample opportunity for networking among attendees from throughout the local industry, Chapter members heard a presentation from Jonathan Tremmier of Pile Hammer Equipment who introduced the assembly to a new, low overhead piling attachment offered through his equipment manufacturing company; as he dicussed, it is ideal for use on forklifts and excavators.

The PDCA South Carolina Chapter thanks event sponsors, Koppers, Nucor Skyline, Junttan, Palmetto Pile Driving, Inc. ECS Limited, International Construction Equipment, and Van-Smith Concrete. The next meeting of the Chapter is in November when it awards a lucrative scholarship to a student at The Citadel.

NE Chapter Raises Education Programming Funds at Annual Shoot

Now in its 8th year, the PDCA Northeast Chapter held its annual 'Sporting Clays' event on August 11th, at the scenic Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays near Coplay, PA, attracting more than 70 deep foundations professionals from the region. The popular shooting competition brings Chapter members together for a day of friendly competition and fundraising. As it continually strives to enrich its membership on geotechnical concepts, equipment technologies, and other industry developments, the annual 'Sporting Clays' outing collects donations from participants to help fund ongoing educational programming and scholarships.

Several benefactors supplemented the Chapter's educational development coffers, while also enhancing 2023's rendition of the annual gathering at the gun range. Those included, Event Sponsor International Construction Equipment, Lunch Sponsor Equipment Corporation of America, Cigar Sponsor R. Kremer & Son Marine Contractors, LLC, Shooting Station Sponsors George Harms Construction Company (x3), Triad Metals, Junttan USA, and Simpson and Brown.

TX Chapter Hosts New Golf Tourney, Right Before Start to DICEP

Texas Chapter Treasurer Derek Brodnax attends PDCA golf outing at 2023 Annual Conference

The 2023 DICEP Conference opens on September 12th in Houston, however, golfers attending DICEP might consider arriving in south Texas sooner so they can participate in the inaugural golf tournment, an event organized by the PDCA Texas Chapter.

The events takes place at Hermann Park Golf Course in Houston's Museum District, a short distance from the Houston Marriott West Loop where DICEP is being held. Arrive as early as 6:30 AM CDT to register as a player, the shotgun start sounds promptly at 8:00 AM.
