Notes from the Field

Channeling 1980's pop culture enthusiasts  Giant seagulls > Flock of Seagulls. And through clever photographyEquipment Corporation of America might agree, because their photo captured just one big bird. ECA staff shared the pic to social media to promote a GeoQuip-HPSI 250XL installing steel sheets at an undisclosed location. Maybe it's a future La Isla Bonita?

  • This reminds us: At 2020 GeoCongress, Van Komurka of GRL Engineers, who has significant connection to the legendary team, 'completed the circle' when he met Team USA's forward Dave Christian; they stood for a photo (below).

He got Slimed! It's probably not what Paris J. Du Vernay III, E.I., expects from the "real world." The staff intern at Premier Geotech and Testing is pursuing an M.S. at LSU. When he completed summer exams that he reportedly "aced" his colleagues chose humiliation for the celebration. Congrats to an industry up-and-comer!

New Florida Chapter Grows Membership With 2nd 'Networking Night'

Networking Night - Orlando sponsors
On Thursday, July 24th, PDCA-branded events took place in opposite corners of the continental United States. Folks in the Pacific Northwest attended The Seattle Social.

That same evening (a couple hours earlier when you consider the time zone difference), the PDCA Florida Chapter hosted the second in its series of Networking Nights. This event  was in Orlando and it attracted regional contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and engineers who gathered at The Porch to connect with like-minded professionals.

The newest PDCA Chapter formally incorporated in January 2025. Since that time, it has been aggressively growing its membership. One growth initiative has been hosting Networking Nights in Florida population centers. These are free receptions available to people in the driven pile industry. Attendees are able to learn more about PDCA while they enjoy industry networking and refreshments.

The Florida Chapter leadership consisting of Pres. Lina Martin, VP Dean Cacio, Treas. John Hayes and Sec. Samantha See has coordinated the Networking Nights initiative, though Pres. Martin credits another key individual: "I'm so proud of the team we've brought together. Everyone stepped up to make this event a success. I also want to give special thanks to Garret [Hogancamp] for his volunteer time and help in setting up the Orlando Networking Night."

The PDCA Florida Chapter Orlando Networking Night was made possible through the generosity of the following sponsors:
  • American Equipment & Fabricating Corp.
  • Bateman, Gordon & Sands, Inc.
  • Blue Iron Foundations & Shoring, LLC
  • Giken America
Pres. Garcia-Martin said that a big takeaway from the Orlando event and the preceding Tampa reception is that the organization is "stronger together" and produces an "unmatched energy" when members get involved. Said Martin: "These events encourage meaningful connections and result in a lasting impact. The relationships built during these events go far beyond the moment. They help move our industry forward and create real connections across our community."

Thank you to all sponsors and attendees who supported the PDCA Florida Chapter Networking Night - Orlando, through your donation and/or attendance. The next event for the Chapter is its Inaugural Golf Tournament coming back to Orlando at the Rosen Shingle Golf Course on Sept. 9th. The golf outing is held in conjunction with the annual PDCA technical conference, commonly known as DICEP. Registration for both golf and DICEP, is now open.

What Happened in Washington? See coverage of the 2025 PDCA Seattle Social!

(L-R) Pres. Darling, E.D. Peters
In one of two PDCA-branded events taking place on the same evening, in opposite sides of the continental United States, dozens of professionals from the driven pile industry in and around Seattle, WA convened at that city's popular Fremont Brewing for a networking reception and program. The event was designed to raise awareness of the ongoing work of the Pile Driving Contractors Association to advocate and advance the use of the driven pile in deep foundation construction. (And in case you were wondering about the other event, the PDCA Florida Chapter hosted Networking Night, 3,074 miles to the southeast, in Orlando, FL).

The Seattle Social was the latest PDCA installment of the organization's regional networking reception series, an initiative launched by PDCA in late 2021, where it visits cities/regions which are home to a concentration of pile driving contractors, manufacturers and suppliers of industry equipment and materials, affiliated engineers, and others who serve the industry. These events are FREE to attend, thanks to sponsor support. The Seattle Social brought representatives of the various organizations from the industry who were treated to a variety of refreshments such as drinks exclusively crafted at Fremont Brewing, a hearty buffet of Greek-style appetizers from local caterer Pecado Bueno, a chance to win one of five prizes, not to mention a unique opportunity to engage in industry networking with attendees from throughout the northwestern U.S. region.

PDCA thanks the following, generous sponsors of the The Seattle Social for making this opportunity possible:
  • APE-American Piledriving Equipment
  • ARG Industrial
  • Bell Lumber and Pole Company
  • Big Bear Pipe & Steel
  • Dominion Pipe and Piling Canada
  • Junttan
  • Northwestern Mutual - Patrick DiCerbo
  • PND Engineers, Inc.
  • Valient Steel & Equipment
Following an extended period of attendee networking, PDCA Executive Director Frank Peters called attention to those gathered in the private event room at Fremont, to share more information about the function, structure and objectives that guide PDCA as the only industry association that exclusively represents the driven pile. In summary, he reported that the just-turned-30-year-old organization which is member-directed and member-supported, strives to advocate the driven pile as the premier method of deep foundation construction that should be used in all appropriate circumstances. To bolster Peters' comments, 2025 PDCA President Buck Darling, also in attendance from his Western New York home where he owns and operates pile driving contracting company H.F. Darling, Inc., explained the reasoning behind his decades of involvement in PDCA. He also briefed the audience on the first-of-its-kind pile driving vibrations study, an initiative that is underway through the support of the organization.

Once the formal program completed, Peters and Darling conducted a raffle for five prizes to be awarded to attendees. The first prize was a generous donation from APE-American Piledriving Equipment, and provided the winner with four tickets to the upcoming Seattle Mariners baseball game when they host the San Diego Padres on August 27th. Armias Haftu from Pacific Pile & Marine was the winner of the baseball ticket package.

The next four prizes were each a certificate representing a $100 PDCA Bucks. This entitles the holder of the certificate to a $100 credit toward any of the merchandise items available in The PDCA Store; this includes proprietary publications, logo items, and even a down-payment toward an upcoming event. Those who won a $100 PDCA Bucks were:
  • Lindsay Staples from PND Engineers
  • Isaac Ansingh from Pacific Pile & Marine
  • John Presley from Bridgestone Hose Power
  • Aaron Rugg from Orion
PDCA thanks all those who attended The Seattle Social, as well as the generous sponsors who made the event possible.
