Board of Directors Passes PDCA Budget, Plots Active 2024 for Industry

As it does each January, the PDCA Board of Directors has passed an operating budget to guide the research, education, outreach, professional development, and regional engagement activities of the organization for the new year. The 2024 Strategic Planning Meeting brought an aggressive agenda before the panel at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida on January 11-12. Executive Committee and Board Members from throughout the country gathered to consider and refine various functions of PDCA such as member recognition, the Project of the Year Awards program, the Value Driven Webinar series, an ongoing field study on vibrations, the standing committee structure, and more.

President Brian Heck formally gaveled-in* the proceedings at 8:00 AM on Jan. 11th and guided those assembled in the room and virtually through the agenda. Executive Director Frank Peters and PDCA staff presented an overview of the 2023 budget and proposed a revenue and spending plan for 2024. Additionally, the Board members engaged in several detailed discussions about ongoing functions at PDCA and aspirational initiatives designed to strengthen the organization through member growth, refined operations, and enriching programs. Toward the end of the proceedings, the Board agreed to a not-ready-for-prime-time photo opp, complete with props - more on that, with pictures, at the bottom of the page. *Historical note about the PDCA gavel, current Board Secretary Buck Darling was PDCA president in 2011, at which time, the Board had used a toy gavel. Buck's dad displayed a solid American Chestnut gavel in his office, retained from his time leading the American Chestnut Foundation. Buck asked to have the gavel and replace the unworthy toy, something his dad happily handed over and has been used since.

The PDCA Executive Committee and Board of Directors consists of Pres. Heck, VP Kustaa Mansfield, Secretary Buck Darling, Treasurer Scott Webster, Past President Kevin Gourgues, Directors Harold Baur, Greg Canivan, Jim Dempsey, Diane Fischer, Doug Keller, Randy Kelly, Mike Juneau, David Price, and Brad Roberts, and Chapter Representatives Anthony Sepulvado (Gulf Coast), Erich Kremer (Northeast), Dermot Fallon (Pacific Coast), Kent Parker (South Carolina), and Condon Verble (Texas).

Signs of the Times

In addition to a full agenda, Board members agreed to take a break toward the end of the proceedings and stand for a group photo. A variety of replica highway signs had been produced to call attention to the attendees that the considerations they were making during the meeting periods were of high importance and consequential to the future of the organization. However, by the end of the event, Board members believed the signs were also great props for their photo opp.

PDCA thanks the panel of volunteers who have accepted the challenge to serve as the organization's leadership and help guide the industry mission of advancement of the driven pile.

Florida PDCA Members, Organization leaders mingle in Orlando

A popular program of PDCA continues in 2024. The organization's delivery of FREE regional receptions to various areas of the U.S. where there is a concentration of pile drivers, the affiliated civil engineers, the supporting material suppliers, and the deep foundations equipment manufacturers began with Libations With Leadership, a social event in Orlando, FL on January 10th. This gathering commingled Florida PDCA members, other area industry stakeholders, past presidents of the organization and the current PDCA Board of Directors, which was slated to begin annual strategic planning in that city the next day. The event attracted a few dozen attendees who enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, and ample networking time.

The PDCA regional reception program is open to sponsors at various levels, and thanks to several member companies, the Libations With Leadership event earned support from valued benefactors. Junttan was a Drive 'Em Deep sponsor, Triad Metals made available free parking at the Orlando Rosen Centre Hotel, and MT Kaye Steel and ASAP Group elected to also 'Pitch In.'

For a portion of the event, PDCA Executive Director Frank Peters gave a short program to introduce the past presidents and Board members who attended. He also explained that is important for areas with a concentrated population in the pile driving industry, to consider organizing behind efforts to develop a local PDCA Chapter. Libations With Leadership was the fourth time since 2019 that PDCA brought a regional reception to Florida, with earlier events taking place in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Miami. Peters also took the opportunity to award a couple attendees with PDCA Bucks, or $50 coupons good for purchase of PDCA merchandise, educational resources, or event registrations.

Libations With Leadership took place for two hours, and was a unique opportunity for PDCA members, prospective members, and the volunteer officers and Board members to connect, socialize, 'talk shop,' and otherwise celebrate that A Driven Pile...Is a Tested Pile.

Civil Engineering students at The Citadel visit a South Carolina jobsite

PDCA Member Heron Wolf provides construction and engineering staffing services for all levels of industry need. With the new year, the firm has launched a new scholarship program, designed to assist a student pursuing an undergraduate degree in civil engineering. If you know of, or are a student in this area of study, keep reading. Here is the announcement and application link from Heron Wolf:

Heron Wolf is committed to our industry, not only in words but also through action. It's our pleasure to introduce the Heron Wolf Civil & Infrastructure Scholarship  a dedication to advancing the sector.

Civil engineering is instrumental in societal progress, designing and constructing critical infrastructure. Nevertheless, the substantial cost of education in this field can be a barrier for many aspiring civil engineers. To foster innovation, sustainability, and resilience in our built environment, it is imperative to provide support to these students.

The Heron Wolf Civil Infrastructure & Scholarship aims to assist undergraduate students pursuing a degree in civil engineering. We are seeking applicants who exhibit a sincere passion for civil engineering and its potential to generate positive societal impact. An exceptional academic record is highly regarded. Additionally, we value innovative thinkers with strong problem-solving capabilities. Active participation in extracurricular activities or projects linked to the field is considered advantageous.

Notes from the Field
An exclusive beer creation honors GZA GeoEnvironmental founding partners Donald Goldberg and William Zoino. Founders Finest is the 5th annual Holiday offering to firm clients and friends who received a limited shipment in December. The unique label has the likeness of the co-founders in Mad Men-style imagery. Brad Roberts, Justin Zarrella and the GZA brew crew released the company tribute in advance of its 60th anniversary.

The '23 holiday season is over and the music it brings is done until Thanksgiving. But we enthusiastically recommend adding the new Christmas jingle from GROUP Contractors to your 2024 holiday playlist.

Highway to Hell Might describe your daily commute, depending on where you live. But no classic AC/DC song can capture the commute experience Timothy Vaillancourt of Tadano America made for a recent project. The Nashville-based support tech visited South Africa, en route to Antarctica to help with a crawler crane working at the South Pole, before heading home for Christmas. Amazing pics!

The UGA Dawgs don't get a chance to three-peat ... but a famous bridge in their flagship city is being celebrated by the geotech community. S&ME performed a subsurface investigation of the foundation under a famous railroad trestle, now part of an Athens, GA, Rails to Trails attraction. The project won an ACEC award. R.E.M. fans recall this bridge from its picture on the band's debut album, Murmur.

Y'all come back now, ya hear? A visit to Atlanta put us in front of a composite sheet piling supplier considering PDCA membership. We hope they join! They told us that Atlanta is nicknamed "Y'allywood" due to its growing role in movie and TV production. That checks out because Civil Engineering Magazine covered a UES project that contributes to Atlanta's place in the entertainment industry.
